Where to install: Mount detectors high on walls (4 to 12 inches from the ceiling) or directly on the ceiling. Smoke rises, so you want to catch it early.
Interconnected systems: For maximum safety, use interconnected alarms (hardwired or wireless). If one alarm goes off, it triggers all the others in the house.
Avoid false alarms: Keep detectors at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances and away from steamy bathrooms to prevent nuisance triggers. Never place them near drafts from windows, doors, or ceiling fans.
Testing & Maintenance
Monthly checks: Push the test button on every alarm once a month to ensure the siren and electronics are working.
Battery replacement: If your model has replaceable batteries, change them at least once a year. A great reminder trick is to do this when you change your clocks in the fall.
Never disable: Do not remove batteries or temporarily disable alarms while cooking. Instead, use the "hush" button, open windows, or fan the air to clear it.
Clean the units: Gently vacuum or dust your smoke alarms regularly to keep the sensors free of debris.
